Spring 2018 at AU Press

As 2017 winds down, it’s the perfect opportunity to look ahead to the new year. Our Spring 2018 catalogue arrived in the office last week and we could not be more excited to share our forthcoming titles with you. We are exploring everything from Frankenstein to the Cold War and sports literature to Palestinian refugees. This catalogue season will be a thoughtful (and sometimes fun!) look at Canadian culture and society with a bit of education alongside a bit of world history.

In the spirit of holiday gift guides, we’ve arranged our catalogue reveal as a recommended reading series.

 

If you like Frankenstein, you’ll love The Medium Is the Monster by Mark McCutcheon. This analysis of representations of Frankenstein in Canadian popular culture argues that the way we talk about technology is laden with references to Frankenstein, whether we are aware of it or not. Side note: this might be the first scholarly book with Deadmau5 on the cover.

If you like a Canadian novel about sports, you’ll love Writing the Body in Motion. This collection, edited by Angie Abdou and Jamie Dopp, responds to the proliferation of sports literature in the past few years and the genre’s potential to explore the human condition, including aspects of violence, gender, and the body. You’ll find essays on your favourite sports novels, including Indian Horse, King Leary, The Bone Cage, Shoeless Joe, and more.

If you like A Thousand Farewells by Nahlah Ayed, you’ll love Under the Nakba Tree by Mowafa Said Househ. Moving between Canada and Palestine, Mowafa witnesses the similarities between the lives of immigrants and the lives of Indigenous people in Canada. His memoir is a study in the effects of intergenerational and colonial traumas.
